The brow, forehead and eyelids are intimately related in both youth and aging. If you compare a photo in your 40′s or 50′s with one from your high school days, you will likely notice that your brow has dropped, your forehead has wrinkled and you have excess eyelid skin and fat.
A female’s brow should be arched on the lateral third and positioned above the orbital rim or upper orbital bone. A male’s brow should be positioned at the orbital bone or rim. As we age they tend to droop, more so on the lateral aspect. This can make you look tired, sad and even angry. This extra
skin is often referred to as lateral hooding and can even interfere with your vision. Some hooding may be so severe that visual fields are impaired resulting in medical necessity for repair. In other words, some brow lift and eyelid lifts can be covered by insurance providers.
Brow Lift Surgery
A brow lift repositions the upper facial skin back to where it belongs. This can be done through several different surgical approaches. Sometimes it is done through several small incisions behind the hairline. Other techniques remove excess skin through an incision hidden just behind the hairline. Once the brow has been repositioned, extra skin above the eye can then be addressed. Removal of extra eyelid skin is called a blepharoplasty, sometimes referred to as an upper eyelid tuck. This is not always necessary, depending on the amount of brow correction that is needed.
Not all patients want or need a brow lift. It is important in your consultation to have your physician show you the difference. By manually elevating the lateral brow you can simulate the effects of a brow lift. Most patients can tell immediately whether or not they like the look of a brow lift. Some will think it makes them look younger and refreshed, while others will think it makes them look surprised and unnatural. Brow lifting is only an option if the patient likes the look.
Once you have been evaluated, your surgeon can recommend a treatment plan that is individualized for your specific needs. Request to see before and after photographs of previous brow lift patients completed by your surgeon. Artistic detail is a must. Customize your expectations with your surgeon. Most brow, lid and forehead procedures can be completed in an office surgical suite with local and IV sedation. This may involve a brow and forehead lift, blepharoplasty or both.
